Module 5: Improving Activity Levels and Goal Setting
1) Module Aim
This module helps students understand the relationship between activity levels, motivation, and emotional wellbeing. During stressful academic periods, students may reduce their activity levels, postpone tasks, or avoid starting assignments, which can increase feelings of pressure and overwhelm.
The module introduces the concept of behavioural activation, a practical strategy used in cognitive behavioural approaches that focuses on increasing engagement in meaningful activities. Learners will explore how starting with small and manageable actions can gradually improve motivation and academic engagement.
Students will also learn how to set realistic and achievable goals and create a simple activity plan that supports both academic progress and wellbeing.
2) Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, learners will be able to:
- Explain the relationship between activity levels, motivation, and emotional wellbeing.
- Recognise patterns of inactivity or avoidance that may occur during stressful academic periods.
- Describe how behavioural activation can support motivation and engagement.
- Apply simple goal-setting strategies to academic tasks.
- Develop a short activity plan using small and achievable steps.
