When problems feel overwhelming, people sometimes avoid situations, procrastinate, overthink, or feel stuck. While avoidance may provide temporary relief, problems often become more stressful over time. Problem-solving is an important psychological skill that helps people approach difficulties in a structured and manageable way. Instead of reacting impulsively or feeling paralysed by stress, problem-solving encourages people to pause, identify the problem clearly, explore options, and take realistic action.

This module introduces a CBT-informed problem-solving approach that can help students manage academic and everyday difficulties more effectively.

Many emotional difficulties become more stressful when problems are ignored, avoided, or viewed as impossible to manage.

  • Leaving tasks until the last minute may increase overwhelm and self-criticism.

Stress can strongly influence the way people think, feel, and respond to everyday challenges. During periods of high stress, the brain often focuses on immediate emotional reactions rather than calm and organised decision-making. As a result, even manageable difficulties may begin to feel overwhelming, confusing, or impossible to solve.

For university students, stress may come from many different sources, including academic deadlines, exams, financial pressures, social expectations, uncertainty about the future, family responsibilities, relationship difficulties, or balancing work and studies. When several stressors occur at the same time, students may feel mentally overloaded and emotionally exhausted.

Stress can narrow attention and reduce the ability to think flexibly. Instead of seeing multiple possible solutions, students may focus only on negative outcomes or believe that they are unable to cope. Some students may become stuck in cycles of overthinking, while others may avoid problems entirely because facing them feels emotionally uncomfortable.

Problem-solving becomes more difficult when people are experiencing:

  • High levels of anxiety
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Emotional exhaustion
  • Low motivation
  • Perfectionistic thinking
  • Fear of failure
  • Self-criticism
  • Difficulty concentrating

Under stress, the body may also remain in a constant state of tension or alertness. This can affect memory, concentration, organisation, and decision-making. Small setbacks may feel much larger, and students may interpret ordinary challenges as signs that they are failing.

CBT recognises that stress often creates unhelpful cycles between thoughts, emotions, physical reactions, and behaviours. When stress increases, people are more likely to use coping strategies that provide short-term relief but worsen problems in the long term.

An important part of problem-solving is recognising whether a problem can be changed directly.

Solvable problems: these are situations where practical action may help.

Examples:

  • Budgeting money

  • Asking for academic support

Unsolvable problems: rhese are situations that cannot be fully controlled or changed immediately.

Examples:

  • Past mistakes
  • Uncertainty about the future

  • Unexpected life events

For unsolvable problems, coping strategies may focus more on:

  • Emotional support
  • Acceptance
  • Self-care
  • Emotional regulation
  • Stress management

CBT problem-solving focuses mainly on situations where some practical action is possible.

  1. Common barriers to effective problem-solving

Students may experience several barriers that interfere with effective coping.

Barrier 1: Avoidance

Avoiding problems may reduce anxiety temporarily but often increases stress later.

Example: Ignoring emails about assignments may lead to missing deadlines.

Barrier 2: Perfectionism

Some students believe they must find the “perfect” solution before taking action.

This can lead to:

Barrier 3: Catastrophic thinking

People sometimes assume the worst possible outcome.

The CBT problem-solving uses a structured step-by-step approach.

Step 1: Identify the problem clearly

Describe the problem in specific and realistic terms. Clear problem definitions make solutions easier to identify.

Instead of: “I am failing at university.”

Try: “I am struggling to manage my coursework deadlines.”

Step 2: Break the problem into smaller parts. Large problems become more manageable when divided into smaller tasks.

Example: Problem: “I am behind on assignments.”

Smaller tasks:

  • Check deadlines
  • List unfinished tasks
  • Prioritise urgent assignments
  • Schedule study sessions
  • Contact lecturers if needed

Step 3: Brainstorm possible solutions. At this stage, try to generate several possible options without immediately judging them. The goal is to think flexibly rather than searching for one “perfect” answer.

Possible solutions may include:

  • Reducing distractions
  • Using shorter study sessions
  • Taking regular breaks

Step 4: Evaluate the options. Consider the advantages and disadvantages of each option.

Step 5: Create an action plan. Choose one or two realistic steps.

Good action plans are:

  • Small enough to begin
  • Realistic
  • Time-limited

Step 6: Review and adjust. Problem-solving is a process of learning. Not every strategy works immediately. Progress is often gradual. If something does not help, it is possible to:
