Module 1: Understanding Depression and Anxiety

1) Module Aim
This module helps students recognise common symptoms of anxiety and depression and understand how thoughts, emotions, physical reactions, and behaviours influence one another within the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) model. Students are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences and begin developing awareness of patterns that may affect their wellbeing, academic performance, motivation, and relationships.
2) Learning Outcomes
By the end of the module, learners will be able to:
- Identify common emotional, cognitive, physical, and behavioural symptoms of anxiety and depression.
- Explain the basic CBT model linking thoughts, emotions, behaviours, and physical reactions.
- Recognise how mental health difficulties may affect academic life, relationships, sleep, motivation, and concentration.
- Reflect on personal experiences of stress, low mood, worry, or avoidance.
- Apply basic self-awareness skills to identify patterns in everyday situations.
